A native of Thailand, Poramit Thantapalit graduated with a bachelor’s degree in journalism. He worked as a video producer and in television for three years before he decided to continue studies in United States. He received his master’s degree in computer graphics from NYIT. He has over 15 years experience as a graphic designer, mixed media artist and photographer with global marketing organizations.
He has gained recognition for his unique approach to creating art through recycling. He is known as a "environmental artist," using upcycled materials and reusable elements such as old plastic bags, plastic bottles, discarded paper, used clothing and other waste to create captivating and thought-provoking works of art. Poramit Thantapalit's art reflects his concern for the environment and his desire to raise awareness about the impact of human activity on nature. Through his work, he aims to inspire people to think about their consumption patterns and take action to reduce waste and protect the environment. For the past 10 years, He has been saving plastic bags, small plastic containers, along with his other plastic household waste, and repurposing it as installation art. One of Poramit's most regconized works is installation of jellyfish made entirely out of discarded plastic bags. The installation, titled "Jellyfish, Under the Sea" is a powerful commentary on the growing problem of microplastic and plastic bags that need for responsible disposal or that should stop used altogether. The installation was exhibited at Arcadia Earth Museum in New York City in 2019-2023 Another notable work is “Masked Arts”. It was installation of over 40 pieces of fabric face mask that he created during the pandemic. The installation was featured in the New York Times Sunday Styles in May 9, 2021. He has also created the wearable sculptures from recycled material such as plastic bottles, cereal boxes, cardboard and cyanotype print. "Flora Frock," a white wedding dress made from plastic bottles, is one of his exquisite pieces and has been worn during performances by three artists. His large scale installation "Coral Clouds" installation is one of his masterpieces. It made from cutting up yogurt cups, along with milk jugs and other white plastic containers that he's been collected for over 3 years, and connected them with wires and staples. The shape of the installation moves like both a coral reef and a billowy cloud. The installation is not only visually stunning, but also serves as a reminder of the massive amount of plastic waste that is generated every day and the urgent need to reduce plastic consumption. This installation received a most innovative use of material award from Recycle 2016 Juried Show at Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition. It was exhibited at 2016 Newark Art Festival, Jersey City Theatre Center in 2018, Rotunda at City Hall Jersey City in 2020, Bergen Community College - Gallery Bergen in 2022 and Rockland Center for the Arts in 2023. Poramit's art has been exhibited in galleries and museums around the world, including in the United States, Europe and Asia. His first solo exhibition "Sense and Sustainability" was held in 2021 at Passaic County Arts Center with over 30 pieces of his work that made from recycled materials from 2012-2021. His work has received numerous awards and accolades and he continues to be a leading voice in the global conversation about the environment and sustainability. In addition to his artistic endeavors, He is also works in cyanotype - alternative photographic process. It is blue printing with ultraviolet light. He uses this medium to create his mixed media, sculpture and installation arts. His cyanotype paper-mache pottery was featured in Globe Style Advisor Magazine in Canada in Fall 2017. Overall, Poramit Thantapalit is a visionary artist whose work encourages us to think differently about our relationship with the environment and our responsibility to protect it. |
